How compassionate handling and responsible slaughter reflect the values at the heart of halal.
Halal slaughter is not only about the final cut. It is a process shaped by intention, mercy, careful preparation and respect for the life of the animal. Avoiding unnecessary pain and distress is central to the ethical responsibility that accompanies halal practice.
Cattle, buffalo, sheep and goats are traditionally positioned securely and slaughtered at the throat in a process known as zabh. Camels are traditionally slaughtered through nahr, an incision made at the upper chest. In each case, sufficient time must be allowed for the blood to drain properly.
The knife and other cutting equipment should be sharpened and prepared away from the animal’s sight. One animal should not be slaughtered where another animal can see it. These practices help reduce fear and reflect the principle that animals must be treated with compassion even at the moment of slaughter.
Facing the animal toward the qiblah is regarded as a recommended practice in the Islamic tradition. Once the cut has been made, the animal should be left undisturbed until life has fully ended. Breaking the neck, beginning to skin the animal, removing a limb or pulling feathers before death can increase suffering and should be avoided.
Some Islamic scholars permit carefully controlled, low-voltage electrical stunning when its sole purpose is to reduce pain and when the animal remains alive at the time of slaughter. Some also permit automated poultry systems when the responsible operator recites the name of God as the line is started, subject to the requirements of the applicable halal authority.
These practices remain subjects of scholarly and certification-standard differences. Because stunning or automated processing may introduce a risk that an animal dies before the required cut, many scholars and consumers prefer hand slaughter. Customers with a specific requirement should check the certification standard and slaughter method used for the individual product.
At its heart, halal slaughter calls for trained people, suitable equipment, a sharp blade, calm handling and conscious responsibility. The animal must be alive at the moment of slaughter, the process should be performed without avoidable delay, and every reasonable step should be taken to limit fear and suffering.
